It’s safe to say that Matt D’Elia’s debut feature, American Animal, is unlike anything else making its way into theaters this spring. American Animal exists in a world that’s part absurdist art film, part cinematic homage, part psychological chamber dramedy, and part existential meditation—all illuminated in a shroud of pink. The premise is simple: a terminally ill man and his roommate host a couple of ladies over for a night of mild debauchery, and chaos ensues. But it’s in the way in which D’Elia has crafted the psychological dynamic of the film and the aesthetic language that elevates it to something unique, honest, funny, and utterly refreshing. D’Elia, taking on the role of writer, director, producer, and actor, plays Jimmy with a fervor and intensity that’s at first jarring but ultimately fascinating. Jimmy is an outrageous human whose brain-wiring may appear to be entirely insane but, when broken down, he is just living out the fantasies we all suppress. American Animal’s mix of bizarre humor and dire seriousness forces you into the world of its characters but with enough detachment to question your own sanity. We caught up with the talented Matt D’Elia to talk about the inception of Jimmy, the visual language of the film, and the seduction of fear.
